Density Exercise 4

4. Iron melts at 1,538 oC at which point its density is 6.98 g/cm3. At that temperature what would be the volume, in cubic centimeters, of 2.86 kg of liquid iron?

ANSWER: 409 cm3

SOLUTION:

First we convert kg to g.

2.86 kg = 2860 g

\(\displaystyle density\;=\;\frac{mass}{volume}\)

We rearrange to solve for volume

\(\displaystyle volume\;=\;\frac{mass}{density}\;=\;\frac{2860\;g}{6.98\;g/cm^3}\;=\;\mathbf{409\;cm^3}\)
