Conversion Factors Dimensional Analysis Exercise 4

Exercise 4. Convert 268 gallons to kL.

ANSWER:1.01 kL

SOLUTION:

Given: 268 gallons
Desired: kL

Here, we convert 268 gallons to kL. Like most of these problems, there are hundreds of different ways to do these. Here we can convert from gallons to liters. We can then convert liters to kL.The roadmap might look like this:\(\mathbf{gal\rightarrow{L}\rightarrow{kL}}\) Our equivalences are: 1 gal = 3.78 L and 1000 L = 1 kL.

The conversion factors are:

\(\displaystyle\frac{1\;gal}{3.78\;L}\;or\;\frac{3.78\;L}{1\;gal}\quad and\quad\frac{1\;kL}{1000\;L}\;or\;\frac{1000\;L}{1\;kL}\)

Now, we can set up the problem starting with our given of 268 gallons. We want to use the conversion factors that cancel out gallons and liters so that we are left with kL.

\(\displaystyle\require{cancel}268\;\cancel{gal}\times\frac{3.78\;\cancel{L}}{1\;\cancel{gal}}\times\frac{1\;kL}{1000\;\cancel{L}}\;=\;\mathbf{1.01\;kL}\)
